Sahara Expedition
Ouarzazate to Merzouga
The journey from Ouarzazate to the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga is one of the most spectacular road trips in Morocco. Spanning approximately 360km, this route takes you through the heart of the "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs" and the dramatic landscape of the High Atlas foothills.
By Private 4x4
The most recommended way to travel. Hiring a private driver allows you to stop at the Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley at your own pace. The drive typically takes 6-7 hours, but most travelers prefer a full-day experience to enjoy the scenery.
By Public Bus
For solo travelers on a budget, Supratours and CTM operate daily buses. The journey takes around 9-10 hours. Note that the bus often stops in Rissani or Erfoud, from where you will need a 15-minute taxi to reach the dunes of Merzouga.
Route Highlights
The Skoura Oasis: Located 40km from Ouarzazate, it is famous for its 17th-century Amridil Kasbah.
El Kelaa M'Gouna: The "Valley of Roses," where the aroma of damask roses fills the air in late spring.
Tinghir: Home to the stunning Todra Gorges, with 300-meter high limestone canyon walls.
